Oh folks, I am so excited to share progress on an inspired project. A room at the front of the home was originally marked as a den on the home plans. Over the years, it was converted into a bedroom with a closet. Today, it makes a great office. I was recently inspired by @mygrandparentschair to make an arched @ikea Billy bookcase wall where the closet was.

The bookcases were a measurement challenge. One of the many unique character traits of having an old home is that nothing is plumb. In fact, everything is very far from. This meant, that each piece of wood and arch needed to be measured and cut individually. The other thing I learned in this project is that you can't get different pieces of wood and expect them to match in width. Over the years, a 3/4" piece of wood has become a little less than. Because I bought different wood pieces for this project which I thought were the same width, they were off to the point where caulk didn't suffice to even out the difference or the gap between the pieces (due to the plumb issue). So, as you can see in the first photo, we improvised. I ordered some gold strips from #Amazon, and added them as a decorative element. Overall, the bookcases came out amazing and really transform this room.

I also included a photo of the floors. I am using Restor a Finish' and the Beeswax conditioner to 'restore' the floors. The carpet was removed by prior owners and the floors were never refinished.

As I discussed with @brookhollowtudor, this is one of the two rooms in the home with a popcorn ceiling. I'm resolved to love it due to the potential health risks of taking it down as it might have asbestos in it.

I'll provide a full transformation and update once the room is finished. I can't wait!

I recently visited the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site (@tr_inaugural_site), Buffalo's only National Park Service site. After McKinley was shot and killed in #Buffalo while attending the Pan-American Exposition in 1901, T. Roosevelt (who was only 42 years old) was sworn in and ran the country from his friend's (Ansley Wilcox) #Buffalo home for his first few days in office. I was inspired by the color schemes, millwork, and woodwork. A true #Buffalo gem. Thanks to the fantastic docent who told us Christmas stories from the home - like how they only lit the candles on the tree for short periods of time, Christmas trees weren't in every home or very common like they are today, and how T. Roosevelt's second youngest son, Archie, convinced the White House staff to smuggle him in a Christmas Tree in his closet after his father (who was staunchly against cutting down trees due to environmental concerns) banned them from the White House.

The castle is proud to welcome its newest resident

The castle is proud to welcome its newest resident, Harley. Harley came from an abusive home and was rescued by the wonderful folks at SPCA Allegheny. It has been a long few weeks for Harley to get adjusted, but she is settling in and loving her new life. Harley loves snow, breakfast time, surveying the castle property, and assisting with castle projects.
